Project Title: Repair Building Lighting and Doors (FFS #R4QG)

State: Kentucky

Project Description: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS, the Service) awarded $28,850 to 3-J Ventures of Berea, Kentucky under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,, to make energy-efficiency improvements at the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery in Jamestown, Kentucky.

The funds will be used to install new energy-efficient light fixtures in two of the hatchery buildings, which house the egg hatching, fry rearing, crew office, maintenance shop, feed storage, vehicle/equipment storage and Threatened & Endangered species culture areas. The roof on one of the buildings was damaged several years ago and began to leak, which caused many of the light fixtures to stop working. The roof was subsequently repaired (using non-ARRA funds), so the lighting can now be restored to necessary levels.

In addition to the light fixtures, 3-J Ventures LLC will install new entry doors at the hatchery, replacing doors that no longer operate properly.

Established in 1975, Wolf Creek provides more than 1,000,000 rainbow trout and brown trout per year for 115 tailwaters, lakes and streams in Kentucky and Indiana. These waters include the Daniel Boone National Forest, Fort Knox, and Fort Campbell. The hatchery also provides fish to the Cherokee Indians in North Carolina. The hatchery is also involved in the recovery of several Threatened or Endangered aquatic species. It welcomes more than 100,000 visitors annually, and offers ADA-accessible public fishing areas, hatchery tours for school groups and a Visitor/Environmental Education Center.

July 2011 Project Update: 3 J Ventures LLC completed the repair of the hatchery building lighting and replaced the entry doors at Wolf Creek National Wildlife Refuge in August 2010. The new lighting made the hatchery building more energy efficient and safe.
