Project Titles:

  • Replace 25 Boundary Signs and  Pylons (FFS #R1BR)
  • Replace 200 Boundary Signs (FFS #R1GR)

State: Washington

Project Description: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a bureau of the Department of the Interior, has overseen the completion of two facility improvement projects at the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The projects were completed using $248,327 in ARRA funding.

The Recovery Act funding was used to replace 25 boundary signs in Willapa Bay, as well as the replacement of 200 damaged or missing boundary signs on the land boundary of the Refuge.

“To eliminate any confusion over rules and regulations that apply to Willapa NWR it is important the public knows where it is legal to be waterfowl hunting and where it is not,” Willapa NWR Manager Charlie Stenvall said. “There are many things that are not appropriate on a refuge, and it is important to have these lands surveyed, marked, and appropriate actions delineated.”

Originally constructed in 1937, the wooden pilings in Willapa Bay marking the Presidential Proclamation Area boundary are rotting, broken, and/or missing. This project replaced the existing pilings with less expensive and more durable plastic/steel pilings located in open salt water.
