The Midwest Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service benefitted from $28.5 million it received for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for projects throughout its 8-states. Michigan Recovery Act Projects total approximately $6.42 million of those funds, across 18 projects, and through employing 30 YCC students and 16 conservation interns.

Projects include:

$2.18 million to replace the Jordan River NFH effluent treatment (R3PA)

$1.24 million to replace the deteriorated Upper Goose Pen water control structure at Seney NWR (R3GQ)

$1.2 million to construct a building over Jordan River NFH raceways 1-8 (R3PB)

$435,750 to replace the propane fired boiler system at Jordan River NFH (R3PC)

$285,000 to replace the deteriorating M2 and C2 water control structures at Seney NWR (R3GR)

$242,000 for rehabilitation work at the filtration building of Pendills Creek NFH (R3PG)

$200,000 for a building over raceways 9 and 10 at Jordan River NFH (R3PF)

$142,000 for Alpena NFWCO for the dam removal and a rock ramp at the Chesaning Dam (R3TA)

$107,000 to the Green Bay NFWCO, WI, for work in Michigan to remove the Nashville and Maple Hill dams on the Thornapple River. (R3TE)

$100,000 for the installation of a microturbine at the Jordan River NFH (R3DA)

$75,000 for Southern Michigan prairie revegetation and restoration through Michigan’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program (R3EH)

$50,000 for Lake Michigan Watershed Wetland restoration through Michigan’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program (R3EJ)

$48,500 to Green Bay NFWCO, WI, for work in Michigan to replace perched culvert on the Manistee River’s Silver Creek (R3TF)

$27,878 for replacement of a self contained fish freezer with a new energy efficient model at Pendills Creek NFH (R3PD)

$15,000 to improve copperbelly watersnake habitat through the Michigan Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program (R3EG)

$15,000 for hydrological restoration of degraded wetlands in the Lake Huron/Saginaw Bay area through the Michigan Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program (R3EK)

$11,976 for energy efficiency improvements to Pendills Creek NFH buildings (R3PE)

$10,000 for wetland restoration projects in the western Lake Erie watershed (R3EL)

$19,211 to employ 30 YCC students at Detroit River IWR (R3NB)

$7,500 to employ 6 conservation interns at Shiawassee NWR (R3NC)

$7,500 to employ 10 conservation interns at Seney NWR (R3ND)

There are 73 Recovery Act projects in the Midwest Region, including six of which are region-wide student/intern employment projects totaling $443,700 including:

$93,242 to employ 150 Youth Conservation Corps employees at rural field stations throughout the Midwest (R3NA)

$198,084 to employ 240 Youth Conservation Corps employees each at 20 urban field stations throughout the Midwest (R3NB)

$30,000 to employ 24 conservation interns at rural field stations (R3NC)

$38,565 to employ 50 conservation interns each at rural field stations (R3ND)

$10,000 to employ 40 Student Temporary Employment (STEP) employees at urban field stations (R3NE)

$73,809 to employ 60 Student Temporary Employment (STEP) employees and other temporary youth hires at rural field stations (R3NF)

The $28.5 million dollars awarded through ARRA to the Midwest was distributed to field offices for projects in each of the 8 states in the region (and one project in Nebraska at Boyer Chute NWR, administered by staff at Desoto NWR, Iowa):

Iowa – five projects and employing 60 YCC and 10 STEP students, totaling $2.58 million

Illinois – four projects and employing 30 YCC students and 10 conservation interns, totaling $1.04 million

Indiana – four projects and employing 30 YCC students and 10 conservation interns, totaling $172,000

Michigan – 18 projects and employing 30 YCC students and 16 conservation interns, totaling $6.42 million

Minnesota – 10 projects and employing 40 STEP students, 90 YCC students and 12 conservation interns, totaling $3.45 million

Missouri – nine projects and employing 60 YCC students and 10 conservation interns, totaling $5.14 million

Nebraska – one project totaling $250,000 (administered by Desoto NWR, IA)

Ohio – six projects and employing 30 YCC students and 6 conservation interns, totaling $1.77 million

Wisconsin – nine projects and employing 60 YCC students, 50 STEP students, and 10 conservation interns, totaling $7.48 million
