Project Title: Repair Guttenburg Dike Erosion (FFS #R3BC)

State: Iowa

Project Description: The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge’s McGregor District in Iowa received approximately $750,000 in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to repair damages to water control structures and improve migratory waterfowl habitat.

The project is on target for the projected December 15, 2011 completion, resulting in much needed repairs along moist soil dikes that protect critical migratory waterfowl habitat in the Guttenberg Pond area of the refuge, just south of Lock and Dam 10.

The existing dikes have been degraded over recent years, due to flooding and animal damage. These dikes and other water control structures allow the refuge to manage water levels to enhance wetland vegetation for waterfowl and other wildlife. The Upper Mississippi River is a major waterfowl migration corridor. These important improvements will continue to provide areas for migrating birds to rest and feed, which is critical to their survival.
