Project Titles:
- Rehabilitate Nida Point Road (FFS #R2HC)
- Repair Rock Creek Road and Boat Ramp (FFS #R2HD)
State: Oklahoma
Initial Project Description: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has allocated Recovery Act funds to rehabilitate two roads and a parking lot at Tishomingo NWR in Tishomingo, Okla. One-half mile Nida Point Road and ¼ mile Rock Creek Road were damaged and have been in need of repair since a hurricane in 2007.
Nida Point Road leads to Lake Texoma and Rock Creek Road leads to Rock Creek Lake, both popular local hunting, fishing, and water sport destinations. The Service hopes the project will lead to better all weather access on the refuge.
Tishomingo NWR is centrally located about 135 miles from Dallas, Tex. and Oklahoma City, Okla. It was established in 1946 as a habitat for migratory waterfowl. It is comprised of over 16,000 acres of varied topography ranging from grassland to marshland to farmland.
March 2010 Project Update: The Service has awarded the contract to rehabilitate the roads, parking lot, and also a refuge boat slip to Bill Beames of Durant, Okla. The Service expects work to begin shortly, and be completed by early fall.
August 2010 Project Update: The Service has completed both projects ahead of schedule. Nida Point Road and Rock Creek Road have been resurfaced, and the refuge now has new parking lots convenient to Lake Texoma. Administrative Officer Rona Duke says that she has “received a couple of calls from the local fishermen that said, ‘y’all did such a good job with the new parking lots, it’s nice to have somewhere convenient to park.’” Service officials also expect fewer transportation problems upon the refuge during inclement weather.
