Project Titles:

  • Replace Upper Goose Pen Water Control Structure (FFS #R3GQ)
  • Replace Deteriorated C2 to M2 Structure (FFS #R3GR)
  • Employ 10 Conservation Interns (FFS #R3ND*)

State: Michigan

Project Description: The Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Michigan used $691,000 in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to repair and replace two large water control structures on the refuge. One of these structures, known as the goose pen, was originally built in 1941 and had been repaired numerous times over the decades. The structure has reached a point where patching and repairs were no longer a viable option, and the entire structure needed to be replaced.

The funding brought the replacement of an additional water control structure on the refuge in order to safely and effectively manage water levels to create optimum wildlife habitat. These, and other, water control structures allow the refuge to manage water flows in order to provide optimal feeding, nesting and resting areas for migrating waterbirds and other wildlife. Both projects were complete in the late spring of 2011.
