Project Description: The Richard Cronin National Salmon Station plays a vital role in the Connecticut River Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program. The facility, located in Sunderland, Mass., is home to a brood stock Atlantic salmon population and hosts an on site egg incubation system. Fish are mated every fall using techniques designed to maximize genetic diversity, and the incubated eggs are dispersed to state and national hatcheries throughout the Connecticut River watershed.

The station’s old water storage system, two 10,000 gallon tanks, was quickly becoming functionally obsolete. One of the towers was no longer usable and the second tower was barely able to sustain the facility’s operations. In April, 2010, the two old tanks were removed and replaced with one state of the art 10,000 gallon storage tank. The work was carried out by Genesis Contracting from Holland, Ohio and funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The company received a $69,975 contract to carry out the project.

A new water alarm system, used to monitor water levels and integrity in wells and holding tanks, was also set installed. Johnson Controls, Inc., from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was awarded $29,135 to install the new system, completing the work in September 2011.

Up the road from the salmon station at the Connecticut River Coordinator’s Office, two small businesses are also benefitting from energy efficiency upgrade projects.

Advanced Energy Management LLC, from Bristol, Connecticut, installed a new lighting system in the office. The old ballast system will be replaced with new fixtures that will prolong bulb life and reduce energy usage and costs. This work will cost the Service $4,008 in Recovery Act funds, but should save a good deal of money in the long run while also reducing the building’s carbon footprint.

The new lighting system will be powered in part by a new source of electricity as well. Fall River Electrical Associates, located in Fall River, Massachusetts, has been contracted to install a photovoltaic system on the roof of the building. The small business from eastern Mass. has received an $85,644 contract for all necessary work and materials. The panels were installed in September 2011.
