Project Title: Install motion detectors in rooms with periodic/less traffic and programmable thermostats. (FFS# R4RD)

State: Regionwide

Project Description: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS, the Service) used $5,206.22 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA, Recovery Act) funds to purchase and install motion detectors and programmable thermostats at 10 hatcheries throughout the southeast region. According to Program Analyst, Judy Huffines, “The project was initiated per the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Executive Order 13423, and the Energy Independence & Security Act of 2007. [This legislation mandates that] federal agencies take appropriate action to reduce energy use and improve renewable energy consumption. Installation of motion detector sensors and programmable thermostats will reduce energy consumption by design.”

The project, completed in July 2010, provided motion detectors at the following hatcheries:

  • Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery (NFH)
  • Greers Ferry NFH

In addition, programmable thermostats were provided at the following hatcheries:

  • Private John Allen NFH
  • Bears Bluff NFH
  • Warm Springs NFH
  • Orangeburg NFH
  • Natchitoches NFH
  • Welaka NFH
  • Chattahoochee Forest NFH

In addition, Mammoth Spring NFH in Arkansas received motion sensor lighting and programmable thermostats.
