Project Title: Replace Swan Lake Water Control Structures (FFS #R3BB)

State: Missouri

Project Description: The Great River National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri is on schedule for the December 2011 completion of their replacement water control structure at Swan Lake, thanks to approximately $205,000 in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This work was designed by FWS engineers to repair damages to water control structures and improve migratory waterfowl habitat. The funding results in much needed repairs and the replacement of a water control structure that has been damaged by repeated flooding events and the subsequent floating debris. In addition to the old structure being ineffective, it also posed a safety threat to staff who must use the structure to control water levels. This and other water control structures allow the refuge to manage water flows in order to mimic natural water levels and provide feeding, nesting and resting areas for migrating waterfowl and other wildlife.
