Project Title:

  • Division of Engineering Tier 1 Energy Improvements (FFS #R1GB)

State: Regionwide

Project Description: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior, has overseen the completion of a series of energy efficiency facility improvement projects in the Pacific Region as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The projects were completed using $4.03 million in ARRA funding.

The Recovery Act funding was used for at 29 separate facilities for various energy efficiency projects, including, but not limited to: wall and ceiling insulation, window replacement, lighting replacement, door replacement, caulking and weatherstripping, weatherizing, replacement of old appliances with Energy Star rated appliances, programmable thermostat installation, and light motion detector installation.

“The energy projects at our facility will reduce energy needs, resulting in cost savings for the Fish and Wildlife Service and the American public,” Turnbull NWR Manager Dan Matiatos said. “The improvements will also ultimately reduce the amount of pollution, allowing us to more effectively achieve our mission to manage and protect wildlife and habitat for present and future generations.”

Following Tier 1 energy audits at its Pacific Region facilities, facility-specific energy improvements were completed in order to bring stations into compliance with the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, and Executive Order 13423.

These improvements are designed to reduce overall energy use by 30 percent by 2015 from the 2003 Baseline; reduce hot water demand by replacing 30 percent of hot water production using solar energy; and water reduction of 16% by 2015 from the 2007 Baseline.
