Project Title: Replace Water Supply System (FFS #R5GD)

State: Virginia

Project Description: Recovery Act funds were used at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge to install a larger and improved water line connecting the Town of Chincoteague to the refuge on Assateague Island. The new eight-inch diameter PVC pipeline replaced a 7,452-foot deteriorating four-inch asbestos and cement line. The old line often cracked and leaked, leading to hefty repairs and $3,000 water bills.

The larger main improves water pressure and capacity requirements for emergency fire response, improves capabilities to manage wetland impoundments, and upgrades the water supply to National Park Service facilities on the island.

“By putting these Recovery dollars to work at Chincoteague, we are making an investment in jobs immediately and modern water systems that will benefit the facility for many years to come,” said Refuge Manager Lou Hinds in August 2009.

Branscome, Inc. a highway and general contracting company based in Williamsburg, VA, with offices on the Eastern Shore, received $614,795 for the project. Work was completed in September 2010.
