Project Titles:
- Replace Water Alarm System (FFS #R5PB)
- Fluorescent Fixtures and Insulation (FFS #R5QA)
State: Massachusetts
Project Description: American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding was used to install a new water alarm system at the Berkshire Trout Hatchery in New Marlborough, Mass. This alarm system will be used to monitor the level and chemical makeup of water in the hatchery’s wells and holding tanks.
Johnson Controls, Inc., based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was awarded a $39,867 contract for the alarm system replacement, which was completed in January 2010.
An additional $16,800 was allocated to increase energy efficiency in the hatchery building. Twenty three old wood framed windows were removed and replaced with new vinyl windows, screens, and sills. A.C.E. Coatings Unlimited, Inc., a small business from Cottage Grove, Oregon, completed the work in March 2011.
Another small business involved in the hatchery building overhaul was C & J Hunt Construction Services, LLC. The Sandwich, Massachusetts based company was awarded a $6,425 contact to replace the building’s obsolete fluorescent lighting system with a new, more energy efficient, lighting system. That work was also completed in March 2011.
Berkshire Trout Hatchery raises Atlantic salmon smolts and maintains a lake trout broodstock for population restoration in the waters in the Connecticut River watershed and the lower Great Lakes. The site also rears brown trout, rainbow trout and brook trout for local fishing derbies and educational events.
The facility is operated jointly by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Berkshire Hatchery Foundation.
