Project Title: Replace Fuel Tanks and Pumps (FFS #R6GF)

State: North Dakota

Project Description: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service used $51,919 in Recovery Act funds to replace outdated, unsafe fuel tanks and pumps at the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge. Three of the four tanks were over 20 years old and single-walled; the pumps were over 30 years old.

This project replaced four pumps and three single wall tanks, upgrading them to safer, Con-Vault tanks. In addition, the project included the installation of a fuel management system that uses programmed keys to receive fuel from the tanks. The work was completed in September 2010 by the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge staff, electricians from JW Electric, and a fuel management technician from O’Day Equipment.

The Audubon National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1956, and is located in central North Dakota. The Refuge is part of a landscape that is marked by numerous wetlands and expansive grasslands. It encompasses 14,735 acres of native prairie, planted grasslands, and wetlands managed to meet the needs of many species of wildlife, including Canada geese, ducks, swans, pelicans, sandhill cranes, white-tailed deer, foxes, and coyotes. Visitors come to the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge to observe wildlife, and use the hiking trails, auto tour route, and visitor center.
