Project Title: Chesaning Dam Removal (FFS #R3TA)

State: Michigan

Project Description: Alpena National Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office in Michigan has the distinct honor of the Midwest Region’s first completed project using funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Their staff used the nearly $142,000 for the successful removal of the Chesaning Dam in Saginaw County, Michigan, an area very popular with outdoor recreation enthusiasts as seen in the kayaking video link below. The dam was removed and a low-slope rock ramp was constructed to maintain constant water levels for the Village of Chesaning’s Showboat Festival, which contributes significantly to the local economy every summer. The project was completed in September 2010.

From a fish and wildlife standpoint, this dam was identified as one of the most significant impediments to restoration of the Saginaw Bay walleye fishery, a million dollar recreational fishery for the Great Lakes. Its removal supports restoration of lake sturgeon and walleye to the Lake Huron and the Saginaw River Watershed. This project enabled walleye to access 37 miles of upstream and spawning habitat, and provided work to local contractors and heavy equipment operators. The Chesaning Dam removal project is an example of people from the community, local governments, and natural resources agencies working together on a project for the benefit of aquatic resources and the local economy.

Community fundraising efforts also contributed toward this project and to preserve the village’s annual Showboat Festival. Contributions exceeded $92,000 in donations from 59 businesses, community groups, and private individuals. Organizations that partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service include the Village of Chesaning, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network.
