Project Title: Repair Guttenburg Dike Erosion (FFS #R3BC)
State: Iowa
Project Description: The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge’s McGregor District in Iowa will receive funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to repair damages to water control structures and improve migratory waterfowl habitat. The funding will provide needed repairs along moist soil dikes that protect critical migratory waterfowl habitat in the Guttenberg Pond area of the refuge, just south of Lock and Dam 10.
The existing dikes have been degraded over the last several years, due to flooding and animal damage. These dikes and other water control structures allow the refuge to manage water levels to enhance wetland vegetation for waterfowl and other wildlife. The Upper Mississippi River is a major waterfowl migration corridor and providing areas for these birds to rest and feed is critical to their survival.
