Project Titles: Replace Damaged Culverts (FFS #R4JA/R4JB/R4JC)

State: Mississippi

Project Description: Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Yazoo City, Miss., received funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to replace three water control structures. Fabricated by local contractor Merle Sullivan, of Sullivan’s Industrial and Farm Maintenance, the new steel water control structures replace three damaged concrete culverts. These three structures will provide much needed water management capabilities benefitting waterfowl, shorebirds, and other wildlife on about 150 acres of waterfowl habitat.

The damaged concrete culverts were removed by refuge staff using a rented John Deere 200CLC excavator from Hertz Rental in Jackson, Miss. The concrete culverts will be professionally crushed, stockpiled and used as road material for future refuge projects. Refuge staff installed the new water control structures.
