Need

This capital improvement project will provide enhanced camping facilities at El Malpais National Conservation Area plus improvements to the access road.

Recovery Act Funding

All work will be accomplished through contracts that will be let to improve the campground facilities and access road as well as provide water to the campground.

Benefits

Campground improvements will consist of a combination of 9 single-family drive-in and pull-through sites, one multi-family or group use site, and a campground host site. Facilities will include shelters, tables, cooking facilities, water, vault toilets, vehicle control barriers, and signage. Water will be made available to enhance the quality of visitor’s experience. The host site will have receive electricity and a vaulted dump station for sewage. A perimeter fence will be placed around the proposed site to protect culturally sensitive areas and an access road will be upgraded and relocated.
